French books for kids: newborns and infants

french books for kids

One of the easiest ways to introduce French to your baby is by reading to them in French from an early age. Reading to newborns has proven to be extremely beneficial for their language development and is a phenomenal way to bond with your child. Finding French books for kids can sometimes be challenging in non-French speaking countries, but I’ve been able to find many fantastic books on Amazon or on the Chapters-Indigo website.

Je t’aime de la tête aux pieds

This adorable board book is about the love that a parent feels for their child, from their head to their little toes! Not only are the little child and his ourson (teddy bear) extremely cute, but the book is filled with loving ways to express your affection towards your child.

Mon amour pour toujours

This book captures the love between a mom and her baby simply and beautifully. It presents a lot of useful vocabulary that you can use to talk to your child on a regular basis, and it includes sweet terms of endearment for your child:

  • Mon amour (my love)
  • Mon bout de chou (literally translates to my piece of cabbage, but is another way of saying “my love”)
  • Mon rayon de soleil (my ray of sunshine)

If you are looking for more terms of endearment for your little one, check out this blog post.

Bonne nuit, je t’aime

This is still one of our favourite French books for kids for l’heure du dodo (bedtime). It presents the routines that you’ll most likely be introducing to your petit bout de chou over the next weeks and months. We always have great fun mimicking the actions and making sound effects to accompany the words.
