French songs for babies and newborns

It’s never too early to introduce French to your child. Here are three French songs for babies that you can sing to your petit trésor during diaper changes, feedings, bathtime, playtime, or… anytime.

Hérisson tout hérissé

There are a few different versions of this comptine, but we love the one from the French children’s cartoon, T’choupi. Watch the video to see the hand gestures that you can use while singing this lovely French song to your child.

Hérisson tout hérissé montre-moi le bout du nez
Hérisson tout hérissé n’a pas voulu le montrer
Il se met en boule, roule roule roule.
Hérisson tout hérissé m’a claqué la porte au nez.
Spiny hedgegog show me the tip of the nose
Spiny hedgehod did not want to show it
He curls up, rolls rolls rolls.
Spiny hedgehog slammed the door in my face.

Tourne, tourne, petit moulin

If you’re teaching your child baby sign language, you can incorporate the various signs for “turn,” “clap,” “fly,” and “swim”.

Tourne, tourne, petit moulin
Frappent, frappent, petites mains
Vole, vole, petit oiseau
Nage, nage, poisson dans l’eau
Turn, turn, small mill
Clap, clap, small hands
Fly, fly, small bird
Swim, swim, fish in the water
Petit moulin a bien tourné
Petites mains ont bien frappé
Petit oiseau a bien volé
Petit poisson a bien nagé
Little mill turned very well
Little hands clapped very well
Little bird flew very well
Little fish swam very well

Meunier tu dors

Mills are a common theme in French songs for babies! If you want your child to sleep, I recommend only singing the first half since they get quite energized and excited as the song speeds up during the second half!

Meunier tu dors, ton moulin, ton moulin va trop vite
Meunier tu dors, ton moulin, ton moulin va trop fort
Miller you’re asleep, your mill, your mill is going too fast
Miller you’re asleep, your mill, your mill is going too strong
Ton moulin, ton moulin va trop vite
Ton moulin, ton moulin va trop fort
Ton moulin, ton moulin va trop vite
Ton moulin, ton moulin va trop fort
Your mill, your mill is going too fast
Your mill, your mill is going too strong
Your mill, your mill is going too fast
Your mill, your mill is going too strong
